Floating Treatment Wetlands

Need

Floating Treatment Wetlands

Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTW) are an innovative solution engineered to enhance the natural process that occurs between water, plants, and microorganisms in order to remove contaminants from wastewater and stormwater in a passive and natural way.

SIMPLE DESIGN MAXIMUM BENEFIT

Floating Treatment Wetlands can be retrofitted into existing ponds, saving time and money by eliminating construction and land issues.

“A proven, cost-effective water treatment system”

Floating Treatment Wetlands are manufactured with flow curtain attachments in order to maximize treatment time and have a built in walkway for easy maintenance.

It All Starts With The Matrix

The Matrix is open and porous in structure, which allows the plants’ roots to spread throughout, ultimately creating a vast, open surface area for microbes and bacteria to live.

PLANTS ARE CRITICAL TO BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT

Through photosynthesis, plant roots secrete sugar and oxygen for microbes and bacteria to feed on. The microbes and bacteria give the plants food in return such as nitrogen, phosphorous and ammonia through a process called phytoremediation.

SURFACE AREA

The fibrous matrix and plant roots create a large amount of activated surface area for pollutant eating microbes and bacteria to live and work.

RETENTION TIME

Floating Treatment Wetlands maximize retention time by controlling the flow of water with attached flow curtains.

VEGETATION

The relationship between plants and microbes create a critical element for nutrient removal.

How It Works

Microbes and bacteria attach to the roots, the microscopic root hairs of the plants and on the fibers of the matrix where they secrete a sticky film called biofilm. This is where total suspended solids (TSS) are either trapped or settle.

The microbes and bacteria also digest the organic matter and nutrients, including biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrogen and phosphorus through a process called bioremediation.
